District Overview for Military Families
Welcome to the San Diego Unified School District. We are California's second largest school district. The district educates students from preschool through 12th grade in 228 schools and educational facilities. Overall, we have over 13,000 military-connected students. Your children will be attending school in a district that encompasses more than 200 square miles and serves many military bases, including:
- Broadway Complex
- Naval Station San Diego - Naval Surface Force, United States Pacific Fleet
- Naval Base Point Loma
- Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego
- Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar
- Naval Base Coronado - Naval Air Station North Island and Naval Amphibious Base Coronado
The important service our military families provide for our district and country is genuinely appreciated at our district. We recognize that transitioning in and out of schools is a challenging experience, and it is one we strive to make easier for you.
Military Connected Youth
Military-connected students are: children in TK-12 schools, and young adults in Trade Schools, or Institutions of Higher Education (2 or 4 year schools) that are official dependents of a Military Service member. A military-connected student has one degree of separation from their military sponsor; the connection may be biological, because of an adoption, through foster parenting, or with in loco parentis authorization.
